I changed the oil on my 93 diesel Jetta yesterday. I got a Bosch oil filter and a 4 liter jug of XD3 0w40. The 4 liter jug left the oil level just about a half quart below the full mark. I want to top it off, but what to use? Only Esso gas stations sell XD3 0w40 in quarts, and I'm not sure of the price but I bet it's about 10 bucks a quart. That's a bit much, and I don't want to buy another 4 liter jug just to get the extra half quart I need. Is it alright to top off with some other oil? I've got a half quart of Maxlife 5w30, but it doesn't carry any diesel oil rating. Do I really need to worry about the diesel oil rating for just a half quart?

That or next time you buy your oil, buy more than enough for the change- that way you won't have to worry about it. A jug of one of Esso's best around the house shouldn't be any big deal.
