i just bought a 2000 mustang gt 4.6 5-speed with 72k miles on the clock. My question is what oil brand and grade would you all recommend?since the car is used i just took it to the dealership to get the oil change done (motorcraft im sure) but im thinking of running this oil for a quick 1000 mile rinse and then switch to what ever you all recommen. tks comments please....

Motorcraft 5w20 is a great oil, so if the dealer used that oil, then stick with it, don't bother changing it out at only 1000 miles.

Ask them if this is what they did use though, as some dealers still think they know better and just throw 10w30 in everything.

According to Ford you should be running 5-30 in that motor. The Ford "announcement" doesn't list your motor as one they recommend 5-20 for.....

NOTE: PLEASE REFER TO THE VEHICLE APPLICATION LIST LATER IN THIS TSB FOR A COMPLETE LIST OF VEHICLES AFFECTED BY THIS TSB.

ISSUE:
Ford Motor Company now recommends SAE 5W-20 viscosity grade for servicing most gasoline and flexible fueled vehicles.

ACTION:
All 2001 and 2002 vehicles where SAE 5W-20 is specified should be serviced at the recommended oil change intervals using SAE 5W-20. This oil is an improved formulation to improve fuel economy. Testing has validated this viscosity grade can be used in many previous model year vehicles. It is recommended ALL vehicles on the following Vehicle Application Listing be service with SAE 5W-20.

All 2001-2002 vehicles other than those listed in the "Exception 2001 Vehicles" or "Exception 2002 Vehicles" chart are being filled with SAE 5W-20 motor oil at the factory and should also be serviced with SAE 5W-20 oil.

Sorry about formatting but the 3.3 Villager should not be their. But yeah that is a GT. GT Cobra is the 4V.

Copied and pasted from a PDF and it kind of jumbles a bit.

Sorry here is an edited list to make it clearer and remove some stuff I missed.

I find it interesting that the Aerostar 3.0 and the 4.9L F150 are back speced to 5w20 from '93. Both these engines have been around a lot longer. Wonder what changed in these engines that they could back spec to '93 but not '92? I doubt they installed roller lifters in these in '93.

The 93 5.0's don't use forged pistons like 87-92.

lostwrench -- Yes it does however with the release of 5W-20 Ford respecified your car via a technical service bulletin in 2002 for 5W-20 as the appropriate grade of oil to use.

Are there any list from Mazda stating which cars have been back-specd to use 5w20? I've thus far not been able to find one. My 01 Mazda has the Mazda KL03 V6 which was also used in the Probe until it's death in 1997, but the probe seems to be absent from the 5w20 list.

What keeps a car from getting 5w20 approved? Solid lifters? Oil pump design? My Mazda owners manual indicates 5w30 and 10w30 are both allowed across broad temp ranges but the dealer uses only 5w30, suggesting that 10w30 is too thick...
