Hello all!

I just bought a 1994 36' motor home with a Ford 460 V8. I will be towing a small car with a tow dolly and was wondering what the experts here recommend for a Napa (Wix) old filter. I was told by the parts guy that a Napa Gold 1515 is recommended but someone else told me that a Napa 1662 was a better choice. Any ideas?

Thanks for the help.
DJ

Well, he gave you a wrong number. The 1662 NAPA (51662 WIX) is a canister hydrualic filter.

The 51515 (WIX) 1515 is the one to go with from NAPA. There are bigger filters that you can surely fit, but they're typically not of as fine a filtration by Wix reported performance numbers.

The 1622 is what you want. Ford was very specific that the class A 460 not use the typical FL1A Motorcraft, but the FLHP, which is expensive. The 1622 says it is a transmission filter right on the shell. I've been using them since my '95 was new. Here is the correspondence from when I questioned a Dana rep in '03 (just curious on other cross references).

The 51515R is in our racing filter program. These filters are not designed to be used on street driven applications and they do not carry a product warranty of any type. Our 51622 part number is still available and will perform well for your application.

Thank you for your inquiry.

Not much distinction here. Slightly larger can diameter and length. Slightly lower bypass setting. Way higher burst rating. No difference in flow capability. Poorer level of filtration.

I have had two Ford 460 V8 motorhomes ('90 Class C and current '97 Class A). Used the larger Wix 51773 filter on both. The 51773 (NAPA Gold 1773) refs to Motorcraft FL299. Also can get the Purolator version L40017, which seems to be a very good filter with a Ford style threaded end bypass valve. The L40017 is $6 at Advance Auto, but you have to order and pick up the next day.

Actually my '97 seems to spec a FL1HP (but then other info seems to say regular FL1A), which has a much higher burst pressure, but oil pressure is same as my '90. I don't see where the higher burst will matter. FL1HP is expensive too.

Thanks to all for the help.
I think I will go with the Wix 51622.

Ah ..now that we have the part # correct (FL1HP) ..lots of stuff.

Yes, the 51622 appears to be the correct xref as is BT8328 Baldwin L39001 Purolator P550222 Donaldson

Still like Tall Paul says ...there's really not too much of a reason to spec such a robust can. You would twist off your oil pump drive before reaching anywhere near the pressure of the standard can.

36' and towing a small car. That is quite a load. My 32' (again the manual is somewhat ambiguous) seems to indicate I should run HDMO, but other places not. I am running Maxlife but boosted the zddp with an additive. Check your manual on that oil spec anyway as you will be working that engine hard. The 460 is a great engine and really can pull.

BTW, mine is an Itasca Sunrise, bought used last summer.

Yep, I love the old 460s.
Shortly, I'll be running Doug Thorley headers and Flowmaster truck mufflers on a true dual exhaust to help with the towing. I will be using Castrol HD for the oil. BTW- the 460 is in a Rexhall Aerbus.
