I've been using Mercon V in manual transmissions that call for Mercon. Mercon V seems to have better low-temperature properties than Mercon.

It does. It has a higher level of friction modifier which helps as well as base stocks that flow better when cold.

I went with Amsoil ATD Torque-Drive fluid. Been using it about 6 weeks now. So far so good.

I have a 5 spd Getrag tranny that calls for ATF. I've used Amsoil ATF (good stuff!) and MTF (didn't like it, seemed thick, noticeably harder to shift), Mobil 1 ATF (didn't like it - not smooth and difficult to shift), and Royal Purple ATF (what I use now - the smoothest shifting I've experienced yet).
