This ad really makes 5k oil changes with a 503 oil seem silly. If you drive in severe conditions and dropped the numbers in half, you could go 9500 miles with a 1.8T, which is about the same as the schedualed Audi service interval -

Thanks to the Audi Variable Servicing Intervals programme, Audi owners need not be inconvenienced by traditional fixed service intervals. There is no predetermined mileage for a service. Depending on how you drive, the interval will be up to 19,000 miles /24 months for petrol engines, up to 22,000 miles/24 months for the V6 TDI diesel and up to 30,000 miles/24 months for 3 and 4 cylinder TDI diesel engines.

wayne: Is there anything mechanically different in the engines of the Euro VW's that have flexible service intervals?

Due to the sulpher content in our gas stratification is not enabled in the new FSD engines; only the direct injection. When we get cleaner gas they will begin to enable the strat. Other than that, I know of no other differences in the new FSD engines.

If 20 BITOGers would donate $5 each, for a few UOA's, I would be willing to use my '00 GTI 1.8T as a test-bed to see just how long Gold GC would hold up in our little 1.8T's.

I would leave the oil in until the lab said it was spent.

I would pony up for the oil & filter(s).

Any interest?

Maybe I missed the answer earlier, but my question was is GC the same as SLX LongLife II or Formula SLX?

The answer is no on both counts. Our new Gold German Castrol meets better specs than the UK Castrol SLX and has slightly different physical properties. This can be seen by looking at the UK Castrol's site and comparing the US Castrol site.

Wayne, I'll send you $5 if you get enough interest from others.

glxpassat, thanks for welcoming me. Of course, just jesting about getting hijacked. I didn't have any idea how far reaching my question was! Reading everything again, seems that GC is the right oil to use in the sludge-prone engines. 5K is also the safe OCI, with a little bit of leeway, i.e. not anal about precise mileage...

So who's right about GC = SLX, glxpassat or JAG?

UK SLX (no match of specs):http://www.castrol.com/castrol/productdetailmin.do?categoryId=9004920&contentId=6030498
UK SLX Longlife II (no match of specs):http://www.castrol.com/castrol/productdetailmin.do?categoryId=9004921&contentId=6008704

BUT UK SLX Longtec DOES match Specs of US Gold GC (I didn't check this one until now):

They don't list physical properties so I can't compare them. Maybe those 2 are same.

The fuel and the engines/tuning are different in Europe which make comparisons to drain intervals between US and European driven vehicles not applicable.
