Actually the 5w-40 BC is sold behind the parts counter at the VW stealerships, as is Castrol TXT 5w-40 (for 50x.x, whatever the new diesel spec is).
The Mobil1 0w-40 is an excellent suggestion, I have used it in the winter months here in CO in my '01 Jetta GLX (VR6) since the car was new, and at 75k miles engine still purrs like a kitten, and still isn't burning any noticable oil.
