Are they the same?
I've seen a couple of VOA's of the early-mid cycle batches. They looked to be the same oil.
How about the very last batches, M0501X in particular - just before the change to the Gold GC?
Would it be safe to assume that Castrol has changed the blend composition, its properties and the color pattern all at the same time?
Or could it be that Castrol has made the changes some time ago and the Green M0501X is nothing more than the Gold GC with green dye?

The gold was designed to meet MB 229.5 and is called Longtec in Europe. The green is called SLX. Castrol is just being slow on changing the labels.

SLX = Green GC
Longtec = Gold GC

It's an assumption.
Reading this forum makes me wonder how true it is.

BTW DC states that 229.5 engine oils must be used with fleece oil filter designed for use with 229.5 engine oils.
Why?

They're probably concerned about putting an inferior and marginal filter on the vehicle then running it and the oil an extended interval.

Then again, they may just want to fleece you on the price of the filter...
