I have 2 samples that are very close together, and I'm curious about the wear numbers. I didn't intend to sample so close, but somehow my first sample was misplaced and I didn't receive it until I got the 2nd sample. Anywho, here are the numbers, 1st number is 3200 miles on oil, second number is 5200 miles on oil:

  • Aluminum: 2 - 2
    Chromium: 1 - 1
    Iron: 14 - 18
    Copper: 0 - 1
    Lead: 1 - 1
    Tin: 1 - 1
    Molybdenum: 9 - 10
    Nickel: 0 - 0
    Manganese: 0 - 0
    Silver: 0 - 0
    Titanium: 0 - 0
    Potassium: 1 - 1
    Boron: 0 - 6
    Silicon: 3 - 3
    Sodium: 4 - 3
    Calcium: 2802 - 3144
    Magnesium: 63 - 72
    Phosphorus: 1021 - 1199
    Zinc: 1170 - 1500

In both cases there was 0% Water, 0% Anti-Freeze, and fuel dilution was
At 3,200 Insoluables were .3
At 5,200 Insoluables were .3

At 3,200 Viscosity @ 210 = 71.9 [flash 415]
At 5,200 Viscosity @ 210 = 76.9 [flash 425]

Most of these miles were very HARD miles. I was towing +/- 10k over big mt passes and pushing the truck hard.. These are both the first intervals I have had since installing my wix bypass system.

The only thing that conerns me is the jump in wear [iron] in such a short period. Any thoughts/suggestions?

2001 Dodge Cummins - 73k miles - Shell Rotella T 5/40 - several aftermarket items [more fuel, timing, etc]

The samples taken really look great...Iron in the normal range is 10 to 40. You could more than likely acheive 10K on this oil before changing.

That is what I am eventually shooting for.

I'm going to do 5k filter changes and 10k oil changes.

Even after a bypass and good oil reports.. I'm still too old fashion to let oil sit in the engine that long.

Plus, a good oil change is an even better opportunity to crawl all over the truck and make sure nothing is out of whack.

Your fe went up 4 ppm in 2000 miles, thats fantastic. The rest of the samples look great as well. Do you have a bypass system and which one? Thanks for sharing.

I do have a bypass system installed.

Its an "IDIDIT"

I used a Wix filter adapter, Part #24755 and a wix bypass filter, Part #51050.

I pull off the top of the oil filter adapter plate and return through the oil cap.

I'm not a big fan of replacing toilet paper, and the amsoil units are way too expensive. I can replace my bypass filter for under $7, and it is a contained filter so I don't have any mess.

It doesn't filter down to .5um like some of the other products, but it does seem to be doing to job alright. I think its rated at 10um.
