Below are my two results from using Amsoil 5W40 in my 01' VW Jetta Turbo Diesel. 172,347 Miles on car.

First row shows oil sample at 9,532 miles. Replaced oil filter and topped off.

Second row shows oil tested at 20,326 total miles or 10,794 miles on second round.

After the second test I performed a complete oil filter and oil change.

This was using the non-Amsoil 505.01 newer blend. I'm now using the newer 505.01 Amsoil and will perform same test.

Looking for comments please.

Thanks

You are pretty brave to have gone beyond the Amsoil recommendation. I recommend 10K max. Amsoil says "longest recommended drain of the OEM". What does VW recommend?

And your metals are elevated. Not hideously so, but Ni and Fe are a bit scary. OTOH, why was CA and P boosted up so much with filter and top up? Interesting.

The oil held up OK and started to thicken.

I do not recommend this OCI with the new AFL. Keep it to 10K.

First row is was taken at 9,532 miles. Second row was final sample at 20,326 miles.

I looked at the analysis again and those numbers are correct. I have no explaination for it either. No additives were added.

I really don't think Fe is that bad considering the oil has 20k miles on it and considering that 0-100ppm is the safe zone. It's a little high but nothing to worry about.

The Amsoil 15w-40 and Series 3000 are MUCH better diesel oils than their 5w-40, especially since it's been reformulated. I'd only recommend the new 5w-40 in VW 505.01 and MB 229.51 applications that require a low ash formulation. The Amsoil 10w-40 is also a good choice for these older TDI's and is still CI-4+ rated.

Well considering at around 10,000 miles the FE was at 37, and driving another 10K it doubled that number which I had 68.

This shows a nice linear scale. If the 68 FE had more than doubled, than it would show the oil braking down over the long run. This was not the case..

New clean oil provided the same wear with FE as older oil with 10K already on it. This can also be said for almost all the other readings.

Even the TBN was linear. Though the oil was braking down, there was not a sharp drop.

all in all, i think these UOAs are good. here's your FE wear rate breakdown:

3.88 ppm FE / 1000 miles (first 9532 miles)
2.87 ppm FE / 1000 miles (subsequent 10784 miles)

all the wear metal numbers are at linear or below wear rates. bottom line is that you removed used oil that was still working very well.

i think this oil and the 20k change interval is fine. i don't know how the reformulated AFL will fare but very much look forward to your next results. how long will it take you to log another 20k?

Maybe 9-10 months. The 10K test will tell me lots with the new AFT oil. Depending on its test results, I'll decide to go 15K or out to the 20K.

So far the new Amsoil 5w40 has given me about half mile better fuel mileage increase.

Just be interesting to see how it holds up.
