This is an update to my previous posts. This 10k mile sample was taken with 100k miles on the vehicle and is listed as the 4th entry in each row. I am still using Delvac 1 and running ARCO ECD-1 ULSD with Primrose 405/402 as my fuel. Below is my previous post with my new data included. This sample was anaylzed by Blackstone.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

A little background…..

I bought my 2000 Jetta TDI 5spd in Fall of '03 with 54k miles on the odometer. The first results were from the initial baseline sample which the owner estimated had between 3k and 5k miles. The baseline sample was before any modifications. I don’t know what oil was in the car. Any guesses based on the additive chemistry? The maintenance records were not complete so I opted to run double Auto-RX cleaning cycles with Delvac 1300. After the cleaning and rinse cycles were complete, I switched it over to Delvac 1.

My driving is 80% Highway (usually 70-75 mph) and 20% City. I don’t baby it.

Fuel: My fuel was exclusively ARCO ECD-1 ULSD with Primrose 405/402.

Oil/filters: Delvac 1 with Mann oil filter and Mann air filter.

Mods: Rocketchip Stage 2, Sprint 520 nozzles, Diesel Geek Race Pipe, Old Navy CCV, CAT Fuel Filter

Lab: Testing was performed by CTC & Blackstone. Sample drawn via dipstick.

The first set of data is from the oil that was in the car when I bought it at 54k miles. The second set with 7.5k on the oil and 70k on the vehicle. The third set with 10k on the oil and 90k on the vehicle. The fourth data set is my most recent with 10k on the oil and 100k on the vehicle.

TBN 10.29, 10.15, 8.00, 6.6

I am very happy with my results. The iron is right on, air filtration is working well, and lots of TBN left. The only area that I see for improvement is reducing my soot level.

I am currently wrking with Terry Dyson to reduce my soot level and extend my drain interval.

Any comments are welcomed and appreciated.

Soot levels are very well within tolerances. The ULSD definitely helps as well in keeping the TBN good. Given your UOA data and other experiences with Delvac-1 as documented at www.tdiclub.com, 15-20k should be just fine.

You might be pretty hard pressed to get the level of soot production down without going back to stock nozzles. Maybe bypass filtration and 30k-40k drain intervals are in your future? What sort of condition is your MAF in?

looks good. wear is decreasing - your diesel might finally be broken in now! TBN looks a bit low... what is the sump capacity? My fahter's 96 MB E300D can do TBN of 10 on delvac 1 at ~8000 mi OCIs, and that is using standard NJ truckstop diesel, but thats with nearly 2 gallons in the sump. I guess TBN also varies by analyzer.

I doubt youll get the soot much lower, without going to biodiesel or syntroleum, so the aromatics are reduced further.

Pitzel,

As for the soot level, I am hoping that some changes to my additive mix may help a bit there. MAF looks good as of the last time I logged it with Vag-Com. I am probably due for another logging session soon.

JHZR2,

The TDI only holds about 4.5 quarts of oil. So, not much oil to manage the soot.
