I should note that roughly 8000 miles into my 10k mile OCI I had MAF problems and water contaminated fuel problems that may have damaged an injector. I'm smoking at take off more often than not and my fuel mileage has fallen big time. This is probably why there was an increase in soot levels and in Iron levels.

I should also note that over the summer I pulled a 5 x 10 trailer and motorcycle with an estimated weight of about 900 lbs. I did this once a week, almost every week during the summer. Driving between 200 and 300 miles per instance.

OEM oil filter and OEM air filter changed at time of oil change.

First number was using Amsoil 15w-40, second number was using Amsoil 5w-40.

9921 miles on oil and 99,887 miles on engine / 10,068 miles on oil and 109,955 miles on engine.

Iron = 49 / 71

Chromium = 3 / 4

Lead = 0 / 0

Copper = 6 / 7

Tin = 1 / 0

Aluminum = 9 / 10

Nickel = 10 / 9

Silver = 0 / 0

Silicon = 4 / 6

Boron = 1 / 1

Sodium = 7 / 7

Potassium = 3 / 5

Magnesium = 25 / 24

Calcium = 3475 / 3259

Phosphorus = 1623 / 1488

Zinc = 1726 / 1547

Molybdenum = 0 / 0

Fuel = A / A

Water = < 0.1 / < 0.1

Glycol = N / N

Viscosity @ 100°C, cSt = 15.7 / 17.2

Oxidation = 61.00 / 66.00

Nitration = 12.00 / 12.00

Soot = 0.3 / 0.7

TBN = 8.43 / 8.07

Comment - Found soot level to be slightly above expected but only slightly. All wear metals are under limits. However, the iron has increased from 49 to 71 compared to the last sample. This may be do to type of usage and/or from the soot. Would suggest you inspect the air filter element for signs that is doing its job but may be close to change out.

I'll have another sample analysed when I change again in another 10k miles and see if the Iron and Soot numbers improve. I'm hoping to eventually get 20k miles out of the oil, changing the oil filter every 10k miles.

Nobody has any comments?

Is .7 soot the same as .7 insolubles? How do you like this oil compared to the AME? Did you get to log any mile in cold temperatures?

0.7% soot.

The 5w-40 oil sample was from May 2004 to Sept. 2004. The 15w-40 sample was Nov 2003 to May 2004.

IMO, the only advantage in using 5w-40 may be during the winter months and cold starting. As you can see by the numbers, both oils protected virtually the same.

The next 5w-40 sample that I'll have analysed will hopefully have some winter months on it. That way we'll see if there really is an advantage in using a 5w-40 in winter.

So far the only difference I'm seeing between the two oils is in my wallet (Amsoil 5w-40 is about $1.00 more per quart vs. Amsoil 15w-40).

How would .7% compare in ppm? I here ya on the wallet thing. Did you get any fuel mileage improvements with the 5w-40? I was looking at some virgin samples of Amsoil and it appears the euro 5w-40 is more comparable in formula to the Hi Peformance 10w-40 and the HP is cheaper but still more than the AME. However MolaKule had mentioned that there is some pretty expensive stuff in the Euro blend he called them High-based amine antioxidants and overbased calcium carbonates (calcium sulfates). So its probably a pretty good add. package.

I'm not sure.

Nope. Been averaging 45mpg since day one. 15k miles using 5w-40. Then 30k miles using 15w-40. Now 11k miles using 5w-40.

Mileage is way down now. But I think it's due to a bad injector. Barely getting 30mpg now. And as you can see soot and iron numbers have increased since the previous analysis.
