Howdy folks, here is the report on my '98 Ram 2500 Cummins 24 valve turbo diesel from Blackstone labs. This is the second fill of Amsoil AME 15W-40 full synthetic, having been installed 4/1/03. Sample was drawn on 7/7/03 with 6,275 miles on the oil. Amsoil SDF80 full-flow filter and Amsoil 2 stage oiled air filter in the stock air box was used. I changed the oil filter, now to an M1, and added about 1 1/2 quarts make-up and I'm still running this fill in the crankcase.

I have an 8'2" Boss V-type snow plow for this truck and received heavy wet snow in early april and plowed with it twice. Also went on a fishing trip to Ontario towing a trailer in May and drove many miles on dusty gravelled roads. Truck also sees considerable short trip driving. 87,255 miles on truck at time of sample.

First # is test data, 2nd is universal average

Aluminum 3/4
Chromium 1/3
Iron 13/44
Copper 1/3
Lead 2/3
Tin 2/1

Moly 1/40
Nickel 0/0
Manganese 0/1
Silver 0/0
Titanium 0/0
Potassium 1/1

Boron 0/79
Silicon 3/9
Sodium 3/3

Calcium 3796/2529
Magnesium 14/466
Phosphorus 1087/1088
Zinc 1234/1280
Barium 1/0

Properties:
Sus Visc @210F 74.4
Flashpoint 475F
Fuel Antifreeze 0
Water 0
Insolubles 0.5

TBN 7.7

What do you think? Blackstone said to try 8500 miles for the next sample. Is that 8500 on this fill, or 8500 from this test sample, which would be close to 15,000 miles on the oil?

Thanks!

Yes, leave it in for another whatever! Looks good, even with the winter-caused cylinder rusting.

It appears they upped their calcium levels in this oil as well when the new concentrated calcium adds came out; almost 4,000 ppm. Got milk?

I would sample at 5,000 from now (at approx. 12,000 on oil) to make sure TBN is not dropping to too low a level.

No TAN report? Diesel oils and gear lubes should have a TAN reading.

You must have one great air filter since the silicon is only 3 ppm.

The moly reading is not too low (not sure I have this figured out yet)?

Amsoil does not put moly into their oil, hence the low number there. While moly is a good additive to have in your oil, it doesn't mean an oil is bad just because it's not in there (I can't believe I just said that!)

I have a Cummins Turbo Diesel and I am surprised at your oil consumption in 6000 miles.
I don't add a quart in 25,000 miles using an Oilguard and RP 15W40. I have 147K on my truck although it's a 12 valve - maybe that makes a difference.

Otherwise, you are not pushing the oil. These trucks will run fine at longer intervals. Most CTD owner's change oil TOO OFTEN regardless of what filters and oil they are using.

Zero consumption. The make-up oil was for full-flow filter replacement, and spillage from taking sample.

I was going to run it to 7,000 miles, as that's Amsoil's recommended filter replacement interval, but received my sample kit, and just couldn't wait any longer.

I agree, most people are probably changing oil too often with this engine. Backed with UOA and the great resoure of this board, I'm going to change oil in the fall and spring.

Thanks for everyone's comments.

Here is the second sample of the Amsoil AME 15W-40 in my Dodge/Cummins.

13,252 miles on oil, 94,232 on engine. Sample drawn on 10/17/03.
The Amsoil SDF oil filter was changed on 7/08/03 when the first sample was drawn. I used a Mobil 1 oil filter during this interval, and added about 1 1/2 quarts make-up oil at that time. Sump capacity is 11 quarts. Still using the Amsoil 2 stage air filter in stock air box.
I also have a Jacobs exhaust brake on this engine, and use it all the time.

Looks like it thickened up a bit. The iron is up also. So is the TBN! How does the calcium raise so much? Make-up oil was from the same container used in the initial fill on 4/1/03. The insolubles are down, thanks to the M1 filter?

I guess it could have gone longer, but changed it out. Trying Delvac 1 for the winter months with a Fleetguard Stratapore filter.

RR,

The iron wear has remained constant @ 2 ppm/1000 miles of use - that's what I like to see in an extended drain. All the other wear metals are practially nonexistant.

The oil is in excellent shape ...given this and the very low soot levels, you should be able to run 25,000 mile oil change intervals in this motor. I'd continue to test and change filters every 6k-7.5k miles.

Look Ma - no moly! ...
