So, we have a customer who is installing a new Cat 3608 engine and the new manual calls for 5000 hour oil changes. How can this be true. Other engines of this size call for 1500 hour oil changes. What have they done to make the oil last so long. They are not calling for Synthetic oil.

Maybe the engines were lasting too long? Cat is in the business of selling engines. :)

Does it come equipped with bypass filtration?

It probably runs cleaner than older engines and how much oil does it hold compared to other engines that size?

You didn't say whether it is Diesel or Natural Gas. a good group II oil on natural gas and good control of fuel temp and ratio could easily surpass this, especially if equiped with the optional filters or centrifuge.

I go by UOA on a location by location, maint by maint basis. Got some nat gas engines running at 14,000 ft above sea level, with water instead of coolant, 86 degree thermostat instead of 88. Nitration and oxidation with Shell Mysela is 40% in 300 hours, 20% with Chevron HDAX at 600 hours. And their corporate headquarters sends them the lowest price oil offered and tells them no matter what, they can't change berofe 700 hours.
