I cringe when I'm at the autoparts store and see the guys recommending that stuff. But the customers just take in their sales pitch and believe that they're helping their machinery.

Well, something you can do with that little demo they have, take the little cranks they have, and spin them as fast as possible. Look on the back side and you'll see the lucas side starting to ariate where the motor oil won't. Of course it won't be near as pronouced as the electric motor version I have but I think it may help show the point, even with that little bit.
