Dextron III

For most OTC Dexron III transmission fluids, they have conventional bases or blends of
conventional and synthetic bases. Some are even Group III bases now.

Dexron III is a great improvement over the older Dexron ATF spec as it has a wider temp range, better oxidative stability, and higher viscosity indices, such as 180-200. It is also a 0W20 spec.

MolaKule,

You are wise on ATF. I've seen Dexron III that was not synthetic blend.

Do you know why Mercon V is always a synthetic blend? I suspect it is for the flow properties at -40c, but am not sure.

Why is it better at preventing shudder?

Golly JJ, don't know for sure but full synths resist oxidation much better and Ford has one heck of a qualification test. Could be the synth's are only one that qualifies.

Many of the late spec'd ATF's also have certain additives for the internals that work with particular trnasmission.
