Looking at retiring next year around Aug 2019, want to move out of California, state is going to [censored]. Looking at possibly Nev, Arizona or New Mexico. Will sell my house and cut all ties with Cali, looking for any sound advice from anyone that's gone down this road, and Thanks.

Don't turn your new state into another California .

Is there a reason you do not consider further east. And what are your hobbies. If you like to boat, hunt and fish hike, canoe, and can get along with rednecks, you might consider Mississippi or Arkansas. Seems like about 1 out of 4 here are from west coast, sold the million dollar home and replacing with 200K home that is bigger. Near the university towns usually has pretty good hospitals and enterainment.
Also SC, NC or North Georgia, you can be 4 hours from to coast, and 15 minutes from very nice lakes and sport areas. Yes it can be culture shock, but getting better since so many moved already.

And the big hills region of TX

This is why.

It depends on what kind of scenery you want. Arizona is pretty much desert except for the Flagstaff area. Montana would be totally different as would Idaho. Nevada is desert.

Escaping a political environment only to find out its changing in that same direction in your new residence is a risk. AZ is headed that way.

Can you travel? Check out places on a extended vacation. Prioritize your needs like the availability of medical care and such.

Good luck and as others said already, don't bring California with you.

We can find space for BITOG members.

Do a lot of research (Kiplinger's has a number of good articles on this) and spend time where you decide to move before you buy to make sure you like it.
I moved to Vegas from NoCal for a job. Retired 2 years ago, and stayed. Taxes are good (property tax is reasonable, no state income tax) but the handwriting is on the wall that the other Cali transplants are turning the state into California East. I fear that California style taxes are soon to follow. Financial discussion, no politics intended.
Cost of living now is still low in Vegas and it's relatively close to SoCal if you like to visit relatives or old haunts.
And Vegas isn't The Strip. We go there maybe twice a year, when relatives are in town.

I sold my house in So. Cal about 6 years ago and retired to Utah. AS you may or may not know-Utah is one of the best run states in the country. Where you should move really depends on what you like to do hobby wise. Here we have beautiful outdoors in the the Summer/Spring and beautiful fall colors in the canyons in the fall. And of course "The Greatest Snow on Earth" in the winter for skiing".

So look at what you want to do to stay busy in retirement-and then look at the states that offer that.

We are half-way between Salt Lake City and Provo Utah. And the cultural and entertainment choices are endless all year.

There is a big emphasis on the arts in this state.

We saw Melissa Manchester in Park City a week ago. Josh Groban before that-and Air Supply last Friday. Also recently we saw the plays "Are you afraid of the Dark?" and Agatha Christy's "The Mouse Trap" as well. Obviously-to us "The Arts" are important. AS well as the outdoors.

I was born in NYC, grew up in NY, then CT, college in FL (ERAU in the 80's) and remained in FL, except for a brief bit up North again (CT/NY/VA) with Mobil Oil's flight department.

Here is my take on the various costs from my point of view:

NY taxed my mom n dad into abject poverty and starvation. 1960's-70's, my father, worked in NYC, yet between taxes and utility/heating costs and the high cost of housing, we starved, literally. Food stamps were not enough and my entire family was seriously underweight.

CT had no state income tax, cheaper heat (firewood) and so on. Parents made a good life there. None of the current CT expenses existed then. Rural homes were cheap, plentiful and nice. Of course that all changed and CT became one of the most expensive places to live. By the time I was a young adult, CT had become too expensive for me to make it there.

I went to FL and discovered that I could live comfortably as a student putting himself through college, with only a part time job. Near the beach, no AC, but good living.

Moved back to CT due to an attractive salary with Mobil Oil. Discovered again, that I could not afford to live there, even though it seemed possible at first. A one bedroom condo was out of my reach.

Back to Florida, where, working as an aircraft mechanic, I made a good life for myself. Purchased and sold homes, built my current, beautiful 2500' 3 car garage, ultra efficient house for $157k, on 2 acres adjacent to the everglades.

Recently relocated to PA (part time) . Discovered that people are taxed, expense'd and charged into abject poverty there too. Property taxes reach insane levels even on crummy homes. Gas costs 40-50c more, elec power is double my FL rate, and so on.

My point: Be very careful about expenses unless you are wealthy. Many locations have unusual hidden costs that are not self evident. PA's school "fees" are not taxes and are not paid with property taxes. Yet they exactly mirror the property tax numbers (in some counties) . So their property tax rates seem the same as elsewhere at first glance.

FL and TN are places where those with modest incomes can have an excellent quality of life.

Be advised that New Mexico has a serious drug and crime problem and the trend for attracting new residents is on the decline.Water is also a problem. A relative has decided that Mesquite,Nevada will be their retirement location. Saint George,UT might be considered. Utah has a lot going for it.

Wife and I will retire in a few years from a high priced location to a less expensive and less crowded place. We've spent quite a bit of time in the new location (I was there for a month this summer) to be able to say that we're pretty sure we will like it.

After you figure out a possible location or two, spend some time there before you move.

Ada county Idaho has been turned into a new California county. The last election, the voters voted to raise every tax that could be voted fort as well as Socialist politicians like they voted for in California..

Maybe a sleepy town like Tallahassee, FL.
You can stretch your money and low cost of living.

I was also going to mention Utah and the Carolinas.

Forget Pennsylvania. The tax and spend liberal government is killing the property owner, car owner and business. We need to get out of Pa due to taxes.

I can never understand why people leave an area and then vote for the same policies (party) that forced them to leave when they come to their new area.
I live about 2 hours north of midtown NYC and it's changing politically for this reason...unfortunately.

PS: ....The snow storm last week paralyzed NYC because of the INCOMPETENCE of the mayor (DeBlasio)….who is too busy running around the country trying to get more 'progressives' elected instead of doing his job....
