Its my understanding that the hybrid batteries are made from many smaller batteries. If some go bad they are replaced with new ones.

What about the rest of the batteries that are ready to fail?

Wife's prius has 28 modules, each 7.2 volts nominal, made from 6x 1.2 volt NiMH cells.

The one bad module had one shorted cell and showed 6.0 volts.

"They" say the electrolyte dries out in the cells. I dunno.

You can get deep into the diagnostics and see the internal resistance and voltage of each of the (pair of) modules, separately, and see that the numbers for all 28 are consistent. If one or two are radically different, they're the odd-man-out. Surely it's documented what the code-throwing criteria are.
