Just picked up a 5 quart jug of Pennzoil yellow bottle 5w20 from Wal-Mart and noticed something. On the back of jug it claims to meet api sn plus, I thought the sn plus cert was only on the high dollar synthetic oils?

^^^Correct!

I think we are sometimes confusing the new API spec(SN+), which is for most(not all) PCMOs, with dexos Gen II(d1G2) as both are appearing at the same time.

However, d1G2 isn't available in conventional oil that I am aware of. And in my thinking, not that the oil companies & blenders couldn't make/design conventional oil to meet d1G2, it's just that they've chosen to make it in blends & full syns. "OR"...if they did make conventional oil to meet d1G2 it would end up being a blend anywaaaay!

IDK, just having fun.

Some formulators don't want to pay for the new Dexos certs. New Dexos certs are harder to achieve than SN+. Some oil formulators met SN+ 7 or 8 years ago.

This does not equal SN+ blends don't meet Dexos certs.

Officially in May of this year.

SN Plus is strictly a supplement to SN for LSPI protection in GDI-Turbo applications, nothing more.
https://www.api.org/products-and-se...assifications/latest-oil-classifications

dexos1 Gen2 is for LSPI protection, improved oxidation and deposit control, etc.

Most conventional (blends now) meet SN Plus in 5w20 and 5w30 with a few 10w30.
