How long have you gone with an expired registration?

Never more than a few days or a week at the most and the couple times it's happened it was because I simply forgot. In Ohio, our registration stickers on the license plate only indicates the month and year so if it's within that same month shown on the tag, the police don't know if they're actually expired and certainly won't pull you over just for that. In my case, mine expire in April (on my birthday) so my sticker read "04-19". If it's May, the police could pull you over because they're clearly expired.

When my wife and I married 20 years ago she was used to her Dad doing it for her. Her birthday in Nov passed and I never gave it a thought. It got to be February and I noticed the new sticker on the car ahead of me and asked about hers. She replied "Dad does it." And I said not now that we're married. Yup we drove for over 3 months on expired tags and nobody noticed! The really funny thing is, when we went to BMV to get it renewed, the woman behind the desk kept saying "so you've had this vehicle parked since November, correct?" We said no three times before we figured it out. "Oh, uh, yes, we have!" And she gave us a discount! It actually saved us money!

I knew a guy who drove for years on not only expired stickers, but on the PREVIOUS LICENSE PLATE STYLE. I think he was going through a divorce so his life was a mess. How he didn't get pulled over.. I'll never know.

I think I drove until April of this year on expired tags, that were due in December. I'm planning on getting permanent plates on the Tacoma this go round, as all my other cars have them so it's easy to forget about having to renew. I know of a local lady here that drove for 7 years on expired plates before getting caught.

One time I forgot to put the new plates on a motorcycle I bought. They were, like Reddy45 said, even an outdated style. I rode it almost daily for about nine months until one day I came out to find my bike in the act of being written a ticket. I talked to the policeman and insisted it was registered; he ran the VIN and saw that it was - he told me my plates must have been swapped and my others stolen, a common thing he said. I was sure that wasn't the case but didn't argue with him. When I got home, I found my correct plates and tags in the vehicle file. D'oh.

Wouldn't risk it - some police cars have number plate recognition cameras fitted, and the fines are huge. We don't have stickers, so it's on you to know when registration is due. Plus, if you're in a crash, no insurance!

We can put ours on hold for as long as we want...but you can't use it on the road.

But some people do... I was out on one of my bikes yesterday - last registered in 1988.

These are becoming VERY popular in any localities.

I don't think an expired registration voids insurance anywhere in the USA (yet), but it'll probably come to that someday...............

You're probably right, but in British Columbia, Canada, it does void it because the insurance is government mandated (socialist). ICBC, Insurance Corporation of British Columbia, " where everyone is at fault" .

I was incident command for a huge tractor trailer pile up my Fire Department had on the interstate one day. It was pouring the rain and i went to one of the Engines closest to the mess and borrowed the drivers turnout coat. All of our turnout gear has the last name in 3 inch capital letters across the back of the jacket across where your butt is, and the one i borrowed Had ANDERSON on it.
Several trips back and forth collecting information and a state trooper rolls down his window and stops me. He says man you are killing me with that jacket. The ANDERSON on the back kept setting of the tag reader alarm lol

When I was a kid, a practising alcoholic across the street removed the plates from his car and taped a water bill to the bottom-right of the windshield to drive to the bar and back.

He drove that way for a couple of months and got away with it.

In my state, if your registration is expired you dont get your car inspected. Did away with "plate stickers" also

Manitoba did, too, which is a bit of a concern when driving in the U.S. with a long-expired sticker.
