I can't get the 500+ lb-ft of torque @ 2000 rpm out of my head (V-10 diesel). But these things appear to be a complete and total reliability and maintenance nightmare.

But there's also this: https://www.motor1.com/news/225766/456000-miles-later-rare-vw-touareg-v10-tdi-is-still-trucking/

Admittedly all I'm thinking about is the prospect of owning something weird and rare to tool around in. Getting rid of my stone cold reliable and efficient Forester for one of these rube's would probably be one of the dumber moves in my lifetime. Ah heck, they're still cool though !!

I'm always looking for a nice Touareg - I originally wanted one to match my Phaeton.

Unfortunately many of them have fallen into disrepair. If you find a good one, go for it! ONLY buy one with full records - single owner is preferable. Of course, I recommend a FULL PPI before purchase.

Purchased carefully and cared for, they are some of the nicest vehicles on the road.

I wouldn't do it if I was planning on relying on it as a daily driver. However, if you're keeping your Forester, then I'd go for it! They are rare (probably for a reason

) and it's certainly a unique car. Heck, in today's world you could probably make a youtube channel out of owning a V10 diesel passenger car.

I've always liked them. Mom and dad almost bought an emerald green V10 back in the day.. Man, that thing moved.

I imagine they will get very rare in a couple years, so maybe they might be a collector item in a decade. But as a DD, even my hardcore VW diesel buddy couldn't justify the potential PITA of ownership.

Yes you are. It is not reliability per se as hours necessary to replace smallest thing in engine.
Best engine in first gen. Touareg was inline 5cyl diesel with stick shift. That was only Euro model.

Some of my former colleagues in consumer automotive repair worked on them when they were new to the market. And I knew some owners.

Lets just say that a Range Rover has Toyota reliability in comparison.

i don't like big vehicles!!! but loved my 200,000 mile 2001 1.8T jetta + now a 50,000 mile 2001 TT roadster 225Q!!!!!

What's life without a little insanity?
Keep the Forester since the big bike won't cut it during a number of months where you live and it's paid for anyway.
My personal opinion is that these more complicated upscale German machines in general aren't nearly as bad as they're reputed to be.
Like most high zoot aging German machines, you should be able to pick one up for pennies on the original dollar, so the financial risk may not be all that great.
This does seem like a very neat thing to own and there is plenty of maintenance and repair information available online.
Do you have any really good VW indies in your area?

Only a Ford V-10 gasoline engine is a safe bet in the small V-10 category. Not a Volkswagen thing. That applies to both reliability and availability of repair parts.
