ON, Canada eh?
Do you think that there would be better filtration if you took a standard air filter like a typical Fram paper based filters and put and elastic around the the perimeter of the paper pleats to keep them bunched together?

Just a thought I had.

How would the elastic make the filtration better ? There would be a great chance the elastic would support the media

Because the pleats are there to increase the surface area of the filter media. If you put a rubber band (or zip ties) around the pleats so that they are pressed against each other, then the surface area is restricted to just the tip of the fold between the pleats - probably less than 10% of the unobstructed (not pressed together with a rubber band) pleated filter.

A "bunched together" filter as you describe would restrict air flow - which is not desirable.

That's why.

Of course it would restrict air flow, mainly near the edges. I didn't describe that dumb idea.
