I asked him questions and then used previous knowledge with Jeeps of this era to make my determination of what I thought it was. For sure start simple, but then there is a known failure component to it and the ECM's from this time period are problematic especially with the charging system because of their incorporation of regulators in them that were usually known to go bad. Chrysler has since fixed the issue. I think it's stupid to put the regulator in the ECM because if it fails you have to either buy an expensive ECM or put on an external regulator (which are available) and then trick the ECM into thinking the battery is charging. It's quite ridiculous.
