Hi,

I have another thread about our dead B&S engine. I am looking for replacements, but am having a tough time decoding the info about the engine.

The engine is a briggs and stratton engine, model 191707, type 2164 01, code 87020209.

WHat do the type and code mean? I have found lots of 191707 engines, but none with the correct type and code. Are they interchangable? What would I need to make it work?

I found one, Part# 195707-4519 that supposedly replaces models 191707 w/ Specs 2181, 2815, 6019, 6041, but mine is none of those specs. Can it be made to work?

It is from an ariens model 927 mower, BTW.

Thanks,

JMH

In buying a new engine, most any similar engine should fit. Same HP, same type (OHV or flathead) will have the same mounting pattern. Then you just need to make sure the crankshaft is the same length and diameter.

Model 191707 means 19 cubic inches, 1 is "basic design series", 7 means verticle shaft, 0 means plain bearing, and 7 means electric starter with alternator.

The type number is mostly the color and decals on the engine.

Code 87020209 means it was made Feb. second, 1987.

since they dont make a 191707 anymore, can anyone reccomend a drop-in replacement (194707, 195707)? I am quite unknowledgable in this area.

Thanks,

JMH

Any vertical shaft Briggs engine of aproximately 8hp will work. Just make sure the crank is the same length and diameter.

The type# contains those pesky little things like PTO dimensions etc. It may also include the type of carburetor, such as those with a throttle cable or not, etc. etc. Maybe even paint color?

The main thing I think you have to worry about are the PTO dimensions. You can have several different diameter and/or length, crankshaft "stubs" on the same engine model.

Supposedly, the 2164 and 2181 use the same crank.
Download the IPL- and see for yourself.
I think mounting hole patterens are pretty much "standard".

For the other three 191xxx IPL's, just sub the following numbers for 8161 in the above link.
