Hey guys! So I was in Walmart yesterday in the oil isle obviously and I noticed that now there is a Castrol Edge 5W40, and it says US in yellow. Now almost every single one of my vehicles takes 0W40 so I usually buy the Castrol 0W40 or the Mobil 1 0W40. But now Im curious why the 5W40 would say U.S. on it and then the 0W40 says not for sale outside the United States in fine print. They seem pretty similar to me. I use the 0W40 for 3 Saabs that I own along with a new VW GLI Jetta. The VW actually comes from the factory with 5W40 Castrol so I was wondering if maybe I should use this new 5W40 thats now put out by Castrol? I have done extensive googling and I cant see to find an answer on what the difference is. Anyone care to shed some light on the subject?

The Castrol 5W40 synthetic has been around for a long time.

This is a Euro spec oil that meets various VW MB and BMW specifications.

When I last looked into it, and things may have changed, for Castrol Edge
- 5W40 was Group III based and rated SN, A3/B4, VW 502/505, Porsche A40, BMW LL-01, and MB 229.3
- 0W40 was Group IV (PAO) based and rated SN, A3/B4, VW 502/505, Porsche A40, BMW LL-01, and MB 229.5

Note the different MB specs, to be MB 229.5 the Noack volatility needs to be < 10% and the Group III isn't quite low enough (but it must be close).

Also, if you look at the Pour Points the PAO based 0W40 should be lower.

Yeah, MB 229.5 is a better spec than 229.3, I believe it supersedes 229.3. So I'd stick with 229.5 and stay with the Castrol 0w40.
