If I wanted a lubricant to "creep," spread, or fully cover a machine part, I would select this agent/component:


Q1: Name the agent


Q2: Explain in your own words what it accomplishes.




This question is not open to Engineers, Chemists, Formulators, or Tribologists.

In the old days white oil and thee days an ester or some kind of plastic.

It would be helpful to answer with complete sentences. An agent is, a chemical or chemical compound that takes an active role or produces a specified effect.

2. It allows the creep or flow by reducing surface tension. If you have ever noticed water flowing on a surface, and have taken your finger and made a new path for the water to follow it begins to also follow the newly wetted trail.

An older post to which I referenced as a Hint,
Multi-Functional Lubricants stated the following:

Surfactants or Surface Active Agents (Protective Additive): family of diphenylamines and amides; usually part of the antioxidant package. Also provides enhanced friction reduction and allows oils to "climb" or spread on and over surfaces. Decreases but does not destroy surface tension


Some call the action, "Creep." In either case, it allows the lubricant to fully cover machine parts that may not get splashed or otherwise come into direct contact with the lubricant..

CVT ATF's have an especially powerful surfactant contained therein.
 
Also known as wetability or spreadability; the ability of drops of oil to form a covering film. It is influenced by both the lubricant and the surface (material, finish etc). One way of measuring surface tension is contact angle - the incident angle formed by the edge of a droplet and the surface it is sitting on. Oil spreadability can also be influenced by polymer content (and type).
