The Ford Focus and Ford Fiesta use a Dual Clutch Transmission, not CVT. Anyway the DCT is horrible. Ford discontinued the CVT transmissions several years ago. The Escape uses a standard fluid drive automatic.

The best part is that the Fiesta is available with a regular 4-speed automatic in other countries, and the Focus is available in the US with a regular 6-speed auto with the 1.0T. And with all the recalls on the Power[censored], they could've just swapped in a regular automatic.

A DCT with no paddles is awful. DCT's REQUIRE you to use the paddles in order to get decent performance/operation out of them, but Ford didn't equip them with paddles.

If I had to own a Focus/Fiesta DCT, I'd change the fluid every year. Luckily, Amalie makes one at a good price and sold by the case.

Notice they didn't use the DCT in the Fusion, Taurus, or their SUV's. Because they know those transmissions are awful. Perhaps Ford purposely used the DCT's on the small cars just to say that small cars aren't profitable and stop carrying the Fiesta here, and move Focus production to China.

Honda's new DCT used on the TLX has a torque converter which helps a little, but it's still not as good as a regular automatic.
