$10. Wifi, works fine. I think most issues are user error. You need to change to wifi connection in most apps and that isn't clear. I use this on my laptop, iphone and Kindle fire. I like kindle fire with OBD Fusion the best. $4. $14 total investment. Still less than $50 if you include the kindle fire.

This is the one I use, a bit expensive than the $10-15 Chinese ELM327 clones. The app for it is pretty powerful with a supported car. Some of those adapters do run the risk of not communicating, drawing power on the 12V+ line when the car is off and in some cases damaging the PCM/ECM or the adapter itself. CA's BAR(not the Bar for lawyers) put out an advisory about aftermarket radios in some VW/Audis can throw voltage on one of the OBD-II signal lines and destroy a code reader/smog machine.
