No since I have to take the skid plates off to get to the filter.

Or a topsider, which is how a Porsche tech would do it.

I believe Porsche specified double intervals for most filters... I don't have a manual in front of me though. I don't know if that is applicable to the VW 3.6 or not.

Even still, it is common to suck the oil and then change the filter out while performing a rotation or other work.

There should be a drain plug for the filter housing which will minimize the mess. Did you pull the whole skidplate? I think only the rear needs removed.
