So the 2 year/25k mile free service is over for my Camry, and I'll soon get to experience the wonderful Toyota canister oil filter during my next oil change!

I need to get a special wrench cap to remove the outer housing of said canister. Anyone have recommendations on what brand to buy and/or what brand to avoid? Thanks!

Great thread ! I'm approaching 30 K miles on my '16 and I really need as much schooling as I can get on changing the oil and general up keep. I have a pair of 4s .

I didn't know there was a factory Toyota tool - I'll look into getting that one!

CTA Tools 2475 Extra Heavy Duty forged and machined from 6140 steel. Plays a nice tune too! Expensive yes. About as good as it gets though.

Like mine.

Google AST TOY 640.

LOL yeah this was part of my research when considering Toyota for purchase; I have also decided to go with the OEM tool.

If so, I have the Assenmacher one from Amazon. It works ok but occasionally the wrench will "stick" to the filter cap. You need a.. I think a 24mm socket to use it, but the filter cap doesn't warrant that much torque.

If I could buy another one, I'd get one like this:

Looks like the second one listed would be the one to get. There's no telling how tight the lube "tech" tightened it the last time. I need to purchase one of those for our Camry as well. Like the OP, the free oil changes ended.

A side note, I much prefer the canister on my VW. The 32mm socket is fool proof to use.

Does the new oil filter come with the plastic oil drainer nipple doohicky? I haven't been fortunate enough to deal with one. I know we've talked about this Toyota filter setup often, but I just don't get it. There's two O-rings needed and two potential sources of leaks. Why not just keep it up top and self draining like most?

Agree that up top makes more sense...but yes the oil drainer is supposed to come with the new filter, along with the two O-rings.

^The filter elements do come with both o-rings and the plastic spout. I've only had to use to large o-ring for my GF's Lexus IS250 as it doesn't have the separate drain.

Tool number two had pics from buyers where it cracked in half!
Since I am now caring for a '10 Corolla again I am going with this one.

Looks like it has better reviews.

I received the Motivx MX2320 and it seems to fit the 2016 Camry 4 cylinder well. It is made of thick aluminum and should do the job, although I have not used it yet.

Definitely get one with the slots that engage the "ears" on the filter cap. They work better and don't get stuck on the cap as badly as the other style.

I broke one of the aluminum ones myself. I had tightened the cap too much, and can't get much leverage because of where I change oil. A foot against the ratchet found the tool's weak spot.

After that, I ran across the idea to loosen using the big outer nut, not with a 3/8 ratchet in the center hole. I got a new wrench from NAPA, along with a socket in the proper size to fit the nut. I do tighten the filter cap with the ratchet drive.
