Finally got fed up taking lawn mower main jet out and cleaning it so mower would run. Bought a filter at O'Reilly Auto Parts today and installed it. Hope no more issues!
Do you guys usually run fuel filters on small engines?

Usually some carb cleaner worked. This last time I needed to use a small pin pushed into the jet hole to clear whatever was in it.

Was out of carb cleaner when I grabbed the CRC … found it a better blast than the cheap cleaners I normally buy …
started second pull …

Putting so much additive in gas cans that additives might need filtering …

With any carburetor problems I take the whole fuel system apart and clean it, including the fuel tank. Then I try to not introduce any more contaminants. Some of my OPEs have a fine mesh filter at the fuel tank.

I like to add a clear filter whenever possible. Usually for older machines, I swap out the lines for transparent Tygon stuff, it's also convenient to be able to see fuel flowing. I put them on all my bikes too!

I run filters on all of them, mainly because I'm surprised at the amount of junk that seems to come out of gas pumps and into the cans.

With that said, 90% of the carburetors I have to clean for customer small engines are gummed up due to varnish and bad fuel. Something that can't be solved with a fuel filter.

Yessir. Just had to pull the carb on my 10 year old trash pump. Always fed E10 with stabil in it. Not real sludgy, but the freaking microscopic main jet was plugged.

I ordered an assortment of that hose and will give it a try … sad how many times I have trouble with an engine over poor quality fuel hoses …

The filter I got at O'Reilly looks like this..

On my dad's tractor mower he we put on a wire mesh type serviceable filter. Got it from Ali-Express. It did so well I put one on my lawnmower too. They are meant for small-CC bikes but they are perfect for this use too!
