Not quite sure where to post this...

But I am curious what is everyone expecting this year?

Would be cool if a few people can chime in with some of their previous experience/deals they've gotten during the fabled December AZ clearances.

I certainly appreciate the QSUD clearance heads up that I got on here! laugh

Just remember one thing they aren't selling it for less than their cost then think about what all of them are charging us!

Haha! Good point... The AAP/AZ markup must be past 100%

Edit: If QSUD is $34 retail, and they are selling it for $8.45, then the mark up is at least 75%... if my calculations are correct.

I'm still working on using up my Auto Zone clearance oil from 2 years ago, but I'll stock up if it's a good enough sale again.

I highly highly doubt that there is anywhere near that amount of mark up in oil that AAP or AZ sells. When they are selling stuff at $2 a at they are actually taking a big loss on what they sell. I'm not saying that if one were to buy oil from this places not on sale there is a decent amount of mark-up. At nearly $10 a qt not on sale there definitely is some there. At Wally World single qt prices are definitely cheaper by $1.50 to $3 a quart. The 5 qt containers are usually $10-13 cheaper at Wally World vs AAP or AZ not sale. We don't know what AAP or AZ truly pay wholesale for their oil. It can be stated rather clearly that it certainly is a good bit higher than WW. Which is goofy because it's not like there are not a ton of AAPs or AZs around. They should have the purchasing power to get better deals than they do. Interesting footnote... At AZ right now the Mobil 1 annual protection and Mobil 1 oil filter is $44.95. Which strangely enough is actually cheaper than WW right now.

I'm not sure why many people believe this. It's a clearance so they price it at whatever they need to in order to get rid of it and that includes taking a loss on it. Ever hear of a loss leader? That's when they price things below cost so they can get you in the store and have you buy other stuff. Hopefully the other stuff makes up for the loss they take. Our state actually has a commission that prevents large liquor stores from selling below their cost. They don't do that to regular retail though.

Technically everything you buy at Sears is below cost because they've been losing money for years.

Best deal I got was Mobil 1 ATF for $2/quart. This is normally $10+ a quart. Too bad I got rid of the car so I still have some left. Going to trade it with a friend once he needs a flush.

I'm really hoping that DEX 1 2.0 means we'll see a solid clearance on some pennzoil products so I can stack that on top of the $2 a quart MIR from pennzoil for this year.

I thought that a little shady as well.
As much as I may disdain Walmart, they've never screwed me on any purchase I've made from any of their locations, so I'd have no reason to try to screw them.
I'll add that I only shop Walmart for clearance deals and that only infrequently.

I guess I as calculating more along the lines of 75% off then.

Would be crazy to learn the at-cost price of their oils, for better or for worse.

Now that's funny!

I'm expecting $2 a quart and probably no more.

I also expect that the AAP 'Breaking Bad' location near me will continue to have employees with an incurable case of meth mouth.

Lots of M1 TDT 5W40 for $1/quart, some ATF+4 & Kendall GT-1 10W40 for $1/quart, and a TON of Delo 400 SAE 30 for between 99 cents to ONE CENT a gallon (down to the last 2 gallons, started with 35). AZ is a weird outfit, they normally sell oil for 2 or 3 times as much as anyone else, then they suddenly GIVE IT AWAY!

That mark up would be 4.02X and that would be +300%. A 100% markup is 2X the price. A 900% markup is 10X the price.

Interesting! With all the 0w20 I have, may look for some more Xw40 to blend with

Cheap ATF would be awesome

I wouldn't mind picking up a few more 5-quart jugs of M1 AFE 0W30 at $5 apiece like a couple years ago, but I'm not holding my breath.

Seems like the AAP QSUD clearance + rebate is going to be hard for Autozone to beat.

What API rating was the Pennzoil HM stuff? My Jeep would have loved it I am sure.

I bought a bunch of that Pennzoil Ultra Euro stuff 2 years ago. Last year, their new bottles with I am assuming the GTL formulation were also on clearance.

My only concern is their 0W40 closeouts and their Valvoline VR1.

I bought 50 or 60 quarts of VR1 for .99 cents. The bike runs through it pretty quick though.

Actually, I was at a AAP on Saturday (Lakeville, MN). I saw a cart at the front of the store with a bunch of 10/30 Defy on it. I was ready to grab a half dozen, then took it up to get it scanned. $3.xx a quart. I said 'no thanks'!

The sale usually doesn't begin until the first week in November. And some stores are slower to respond. Typically, they've marked down 50% in the first month. Then in December, the big mark downs sometimes come to $1 or less.

I agree that the recent AAP sale (with QS rebates) will be very hard to beat. I just picked up QSUD today at 75c/qt. And that's before the $1.40/quart rebate. Cheapest oil I've ever gotten at the AutoZone clearances is $2/qt for synthetics. Last year, a number of Bitogers were lucky to find Pennzoil and QS on sale for $2/qt and were able to apply the rebates to net out at 0c-60c/qt for Sopus Synthetics.

I haven't used any Pennzoil rebates this year. So if we get $2/qt at AZ...I'm in for the $48 Pennzoil rebate limit....for "free" oil (not counting tax).

Saving money and/or getting paid to get oil is pretty sweet though wink

+1

Most that laugh at threads like this would not step over a $20 bill found on the ground. Same thing with buying cheap and stacking deep.

Not necessarily laughing at saving money, I'm all for it. Just picturing a bunch of guys licking their lips and setting their alarms for 3am preparing for an oil sale that's 2 months away.

Still loling

I just stop in stores that I pass by anyway. If I have some free time, I'll cruise to a few stores I haven't been to before. Been to a few areas around Orlando I've never been to; some I probably won't go back to!

I wouldn't wake up at 3AM, but I do admit to getting a little excited walking into an AAP and seeing several quarts or jugs of QSUD on the shelf without the red sticker undearneath, knowing that they'll ring up way cheaper at checkout. For that, I guess that makes me a little quirky lol

Hate to break it to you, but your perception does not meet reality.

First of all, it is not a sale but a clearance. Secondly, outside BITOG, most of the general public does not even know about it and in many cases, the store employees do not know until you throw it on the counter and is scanned at the clearance price. Many AutoZones are too lazy to change the shelving price tags to reflect the clearance price and basically becomes a word of mouth affair on BITOG. Most times you can still find the clearance stuff around well into January in some stores because it is so disorganize.

Yeah, it's more like a treasure hunt or scavenger hunt. It's up to the local managers so one store will be at full price and the other will be discounted. And then the one at full price will put it on clearance a few weeks later so you just have to hunt around and maybe come back later to see if it goes on clearance later. Because it's not a sale, it doesn't have the black friday madness to it, you just look around once some people mention that it's on clearance.
