Sorry for beating a dead horse concerning BC 0w40!

Quattro Pete posted this in another thread regarding Pennzoil Euro:
For the 5w40:
HT/HS: 3.6 cP
Noack: 6.2%

I have never been able to find that information.
And what that has to do with 0W40? 0W40 same base stock will always have higher NOACK then 5W40.
One version of Pennzoil 5W40 with first batch of GTL had HTHS 3.88 and NOACK 6.8%. However, soon it disappear.

Agreed. Just look at the pour points of each

Not to mention 5W-40s lack of top-level OEM approvals.

Which approvals is the 5W40 missing?

MB 229.5

Fair enough.

And I believe that is because of Noack. MB 229.5 requires Noack of 10% or less.

Yes, Castrol 5W40 had it at 13%, now it is at 11%.
I used for some time Castrol 5W40 in my Passat B5.5 1.8T, and 4K is maximum before hydro lifters start to knock.
After switching to Castrol 0W30, never had that issue, or M1 0W40 or Pennzoil 5W40.
But, that was some 7yrs ago.
Still, no MB229.5.

Appears to come from S'pore (whatever the blend is) mobil1.com.sg - Of course if base oil is not from there - chemical tankers roam the globe.

OK, so 0W40 has a NOACK of 9.1, the 5W40 is 11.0. Small, but not insignificant difference there.

That tells a lot about base oil.

Castrol's website can be confusing. They seem to have two oils listed for both 0w30 and 0w40 on safety data sheets. For example they list Castrol 0w30 and Castrol 0W40 as having 50-75 percent PAO Basestock. Then they have oil listed as Castrol 0w30 A3/B4 and Castrol 0w40 A3/B4 that has 25-50 percent PAO Basestock. Wondered which one is sold here 0w30 Amazon and 0w40 Wally World.

Can you provide links to these SDSes?

And then there are the listings and pictures for the 0w40 on amazon.de (German) that show it as technosynthese.

Checked it this morning, HC-Synthese.

Don't get caught up in base stocks for the oil. It can change, and the MSDS/SDS isn't necessarily correct.

Bottle images on castrol.de show "vollsynthese", but when you look at the german product sheet, it doesn't mention anything.

Yes, that is confusing. I am only seeing the A3/B4 versions at retail currently.
