I replace the battery every 5 years without fail. Always get the 'gold' line, and always a Johnson Control (always verify) made battery. AZ, AA, Sears Diehard - whatever costs less at the time. Never had a battery failure. This may be arbitrary, but I've noticed my alternators last way longer after I started this routine (20 plus years ago).

It's not arbitrary.

Looking around Costco seems to be the best deal in my area. Also I use my car batteries till they die. I then get a jump and go buy a new one. If I lived in a rough part of the country I'd maybe consider replacing it sooner.

Just rereading battery questions/comments.

"What we need is..."

A poll on battery life involving a few questions 1) long, short or mixed driving, 2) general climate-there should be zones already, 3) brand, 4) length of life, 5) any early replacement data, 6) size-group,

Also, since a battery purchases now require coupons and pre-paying over the internet, a streamlined reporting of battery promotions would be helpful.
