Is there any alternative to the Cat HYDO oil for hydraulic system ? I saw some Traveller brand "Premium" Trans Hydraulic Fluid at Tractor Supply but it only lists Cat T0-2 designation which is an older one, so I'm afraid to buy it. Is there any aftermarket oil that matches the HYDO spec, Cat Hydo is $ 150 for 5 gallons at the Cat dealer and I need 4 pails.

Cat HYDO is hydraulic oil, with minimum 900 ppm of zinc.
Cat TO-2 is a an obsolete spec for transmission oil, which could be used as a hydraulic oil.... but may contain VI improvers.
I would use any branded hydraulic oils in AW 46 /AW 68/AW 100 grades.

Are you looking for hydraulic oil that meets the HYDO spec, or light weight gear lube that meets the TO-4 specificiation? As zeng said the hydo is hydraulic, the TO-4 is transmission oil.

What about ISO 46 and GL4 are they compatible or old also ? So basically stay away from anything rated for TO-2 because it's the older spec. and anything that states "hydraulic/transmission oil" ? My 2003 manual just says HYDO 10/30, Cat put out a bulletin in 2016 stating new oils, HYDO 10 wt, HYDO 20 wt, and HYDO 30 wt. and states : If a different viscosity is required due to ambient temperatures, the following Caterpillar oils can be used: Cat Diesel Engine oil 10/30 or 15/40. I mean is that basically saying I can throw 5/40 Rotella full synthetic or 15/40 Rotella synthetic blend oil in there ? If I gotta pay the same price, I think I'd rather have synthetic, although they state if using DEO then the fluid change interval should be 2000 hours instead of 6000 ??

Looking for HYDO but not wanting to pay Cat $150 a pail !

I just checked my manual and it says HYDO only. And the 2016 bulletin says DEO to substitute HYDO. looking thru the Schaeffer 239 it doesn't state anywhere it meets HYDO spec.

This should have most of the info you are looking for.

Schaeffers meets and exceeds all the specs discussed here. Updating TD sheets for every manufacturers newest fluid is a timely and costly process.a Schaeffers 239s will not only reduce your temperatures, extend the life of your components, but will generally save you money in fuel usage.

Do you sell the stuff or something? You mention it all the time. Proper disclosure would be nice.

I do and have for over 14 years.
Most on the board are aware of that, as I am one of early members
This makes me prejudiced and biased, but far from un-factual.

Just looked on the website, cant find this 239S stuff on there, but the cut sheet for it you posted states TO4, this is HYDO spec which is newer, here is the content someone posted https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=5&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjm5beblMbWAhWBblAKHW20Bj4QFghEMAQ&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.toromontcat.com%2Fpdf%2FHydraulicOil.pdf&usg=AFQjCNGPlj7OH1Pim00HvNx0JVCCLjPe5Q
o you have an oil with that content ? Or close ? Seems like zinc is a big issue in this oil. Is it synthetic ? Is the Schaeffer stuff synthetic ?

Schaeffers 239s is a semi-synthetic blend. The Scheffers td sheet is EXTREMELY informative and educational. This fluid rocks!!!
pm memoir pricing details if interested. Thanks

Appreciate your elaboration on cautionary notes advising against hydraulic applications in farm tractors , and it's rationale ?
