This is the 9th UOA I've done on this vehicle.

The reason I do extended oil changes and used oil analysis is so we might all learn something, and I find it interesting.

This analysis is about Mobil1 5-30w EP. The oil was 13 mths old, w/13,000 miles. The vehicle is a 07 Toyota FJ Cruiser w/a gasoline 4.0L engine that has 169k miles since new. No make-up oil was added, because it doesn't use any. The vehicle is my daily driver. We live in the country, so it doesn't see much stop and go driving. In fact, my daughter moved out over a yr ago, so its getting even fewer short trips and not as many miles/yr as in the past.

I put a Parento TopDog V brand engine oil bypass filtration system on the vehicle 7 yrs ago. This bypass system utilizes one Amsoil EaBP90 filter. The EaBP90 spin-on element was last changed Nov of 2014, 37k miles ago. I changed the bypass system O-rings and the oil lines this time since they were 7 yrs old.

The air filter is an Amsoil EaA238(discontinued) element with 98k miles since new. I blow it out at each oil change. Before suggesting to me that is where the SI is coming from, take note the early results are even worse. Over the yrs, I've looked for induction system leaks and tried 3 different brand air filters elements in hope of reducing the Si/silicon level, all without success. This filter works as good or better than any that I've tried.

Mobil 1 EP is relatively cheap and readily available at WalMart. I liked these results. The additive package had some life left in it, even after 13k miles, with a TBN of 2.92. My personal lower limit for TBN is 2.0. IMO, so far I haven't damaged this vehicle, and I'm not wasting as much time and oil as I use to when I was changing my oil and filter every 3K miles.

Immediately after I took this sample, I changed the oil w/Mobil1 Annual Protection(more $). I changed the Fram XG8A full flow filter and the Amsoil EaBP90 bypass filter w/new too.

LAB: Oil Analyzers Inc - OAI(Polaris Laboratories)
LAB COMMENTS: Continue to observe the trend and monitor equipment and fluid conditions. TBN base# is MODERATELY LOW. As TBN base# depletes, the ability to neutralize acids is diminished and corrosive wear may occur. Sludge and deposits may form. Silicon is at a MINOR LEVEL. Boron is slightly low for this lubricant. Boron sources may naturally decline with use so this is not a concern.

Old results on left side, newer as you go right

Great Work OP !!
Thank you very much for testing over such long runs, it's very interesting.

I agree the M1 5W30 EP and your car is doing fine. With 22ppm iron, a TBN of 2.92 and a KV100 of 10.2 cSt, you and the oil are doing great after 13,000 miles. Low wear, ample TBN left and still in grade. That Extended Performance does very much go the distance.

May I ask, in order (L to R) what are the other oils and miles. ?

Thanks again for doing real distance on this oil. Thanks for sharing.

The first 6 samples look like HDEO's (15w-40?), boutique 30 grade oils, or even 40/50 graded synthetics. Very strong Calcium in those first 6. One might say you tried 3 different types of oils so far and all of them have done good for you. Your air and oil filter(s) regimen could be the underlying reason.

You asked for it so you got it.

Sample #1) Dec of 10, 17,000 miles, Amsoil SSO 0-30w, no bypass system yet, changed FF filter w/makeup oil at 8k miles.

Sample #2) Dec of 11, 18,700 miles, Amsoil SSO 0-30w, bypass system in place

Sample #3) Aug of 12, 12,200 miles, Amsoil AMO 10-40w

Sample #4) May of 13, 14,000 miles, Amsoil AMO 10-40w

Sample #5) March of 14, 15,000 miles, Amsoil AMO 10-40w

Sample #6) Nov of 14, 14,200 miles, Amsoil ACD 10-30w

Sample #7) July of 15, 10,100 miles, SuperTech 5-30w

Sample #8) April of 16, 11,000 miles, Mobil 1 5-30w

Sample #9) Aug of 17, 13,000 miles, Mobil 1 EP 5-30w

*note* sometimes I go a couple more thousand miles after receiving the report before changing the oil. This last time I didn't wait.

My gas mileage has never varied(20mpg) even though this engine has VVT.

Also, one of these yrs I'm gonna get brave and start running and testing various dinosaur oils. I'd love to do a run using Chevron Delo400LE 15-40w.

I'm really amazed more than anything how well the SuperTech performed compared to all the boutique oils. Good showing! Nice engine, thanks for sharing!

I know !!! A run of boutique oil with more HTHS and more ZDDP, and by the wear numbers, you can't even pick it from Super Tech with any certainty. It just goes to show, once you have enough, more doesn't help.

The Supertech keeps the parts separated. That is what oil mainly does. There may be a difference in a high(er) output engine I really do not know.

you have to credit Toyota on the design/build of this 4.0L engine, to function at wear levels like that regardless of lubrication formula is amazing and we've see it here before, this is no 'one off'
