Donating a car vs junkyard

I donated a car (that actually ran) and all I had to do was send them the key and signed title and they came and picked it up. They followed up with a letter of donation to the organization. I got a tax deduction in return, and rid of the car.

I don't know about you, but I don't want my neighbor's junk vehicle sitting out for months on end. If it's occasionally driven, fine with me. But if it's "inoperable" then it should be in a repair shop or junkyard.

I'm glad I live in a country that doesn't tell me when to mow my lawn, or remove cars from my own property.

I PROMISE you that there are parts of your country where you can't keep a bunch of junk on your lawn.

Oh yes, I'm sure you can - some guy got into trouble for driving a tractor onto Parliments steps. There was a guy I knew who had acres and acres of cars on his property, his property was commercial and he ran a wrecking and specialist BMC repair shop there. You could only see the cars with a helicopter, but some neighbours still complained. He got onto council as a counciler to fight his case, but still had to move them. It was really a case of urban sprawl running over rural land. Similar case to city refugees complaining about mooing cows.

I had an old car that I needed to get rid of recently and called a few junkyards. I got offers as low as $25 USD and no more than about $50 USD. I was shocked. I thought the battery alone not to mention any number of parts would be worth that alone. It turns out no one here keeps old cars anymore so don't want the parts. Guess things have changed since I was a youngster. They just crush the cars and recycle the steel and the price of steel here is at record lows.

The City Councils here have very little power at all. They can ask you to clean up your property, but as long as you're paying the yearly taxes, there's really nothing they can do. People are acting like the OP was running a wreckers yard on his front lawn, but that's not how I took it...there are 4 cars in my driveway as I type, one of which runs but isn't currently registered, it's certainly not an eyesore.

But to answer the original question - I'd take the 80 bucks rather than nothing at all

Pretty hard to find. Technically the federal government has something to say about all lands (is there anyplace where I can legally bury tires, used motor oil or the like?). Local governments have a varying amount of say. Really no way around it: as population density rises, people start having more of an interest in what they see around them. Live out in the middle of nowhere and (usually) no one cares. Oddly enough, not too many people want to live where it's an effort to get to stores, attractions, people. So we're forced into getting along with each other.
