A couple months back I changed the oil in my Accord and saw metal flakes in the drain pan. I couldn't confirm that they were from the Accord so I did a 2K mile oil change and rechecked. I put some panty hose over the oil drain pan and it caught a single metal flake. I don't think any metal is good but I assume 1 flake is ok?

Was the oil black at just 2K?

I was surprised to find in late model engines, that super fine wear metals turns the oil black more then ‘soot’ and combustion by products. In old vintage 60’s cars a different story.

I’ve been using magnets on the spin-on oil filter to clean the oil and it works. You need more then just one magnet, you need lots but I find it’s worth it.

Check out PDF with nice Pics and a product review:

Cut the oil filter open and see what is in it.
If the filter is full of metal flakes, you may be needing a new engine soon.
If you have metal in the oil that drains out, the filter was in bypass or a tear in the media.

When I lived with a failing transmission in one of my cars, keeping it alive by frequently changing the oil and filter, my oil drains were always full of stars. Beautiful specks of metal, different colors.
