I want to poach the finned diff cover from a 2002-2010 Explorer to put on my Mustang. I know it has the IRS mounting ears, but tons of guys on the Mustang forums are cutting them off and ending up with a super cheap finned diff cover in the process (also has the added bonus of coming with a higher vent location to prevent spillage during track use).

The cover's gone up in price tremendously, and it would be cheaper for me to just buy a finned diff cover, but...there's a few Explorers at a local pick n pull near me - one of which is laying upside down lol!

I know to remove the whole diff, the spindles, axles, calipers, driveshaft and upper control arms need to be disconnected, but does anyone know if there would be a hack n slash way to get just the cover off, perhaps by unbolting the diff alone and letting it hang? That would be a huge time saver and make it worthwhile. I don't think the junkyard owner would be too happy with me if I cut the subframe to get to a $5 cover lol.

Has anyone done this or serviced an IRS explorer rear end?
