I'm looking for a small air compressor to fill up my personal vehicles' tires as its primary use. Not to take with me on trips, but simply keep in the garage to ensure the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. What would be the best choice with a budget of $100?

Got a 3 gallon/1 HP/135 psi oil lubricated unit from Sears - $99 ...
Like it fine for topping up tires and misc stuff a portable can do ...

I used the Harbor Freight model that Miller88 mentioned for years at the track. I use a Ryobi cordless inflator now, but it's really only great fo adjusting tires a few PSI; I think it would be awful, if not useless for big truck tires.

Every other weekend I use one to inflate my 4 jeep tires and usually one or 2 others end up using it.

How long does this take to move like 5PSI?

I have a smaller one from walmart... https://www.walmart.com/ip/Wagan-Quick-Flow-Compact-Air-Compressor/29764692

something close to that for $10, its "Slime" branded. The hose is very short but it gets the job done at roughly 2 PSI per minute. I wanted one with a longer hose and hopefully a little faster.

These are great, and I highly recommend keeping one in your vehicle along with some tire plugs. I have to do that routine at least once a year!!

For your home, I have had one of those "oil filled" (I will never again buy oil-less) 2hp pancake roofing compressors - for 16 years and it still woks great!

Watch for coupons - the 2HP 8 gallon one can be had for $89 or $99 and is a great unit as well.

It depends on the tire, but for "cig lighter socket models" - it's one of the best I've ever tried

Get the $39 3 gallon pancake compressor. Its lightweight, easy to use, easy to move, and more than enough for tire inflation. I got a brand new in box Harbor Freight pancake compressor several years back for free while cleaning out an abandoned house (everything was to be thrown in the dumpster) and it works GREAT for tire inflation. MUCH better than one of those 12 volt dinky jobs.

I have a shoe box sized Black & Decker "Air Station". It uses line voltage and delivers a reasonable flow of compressed air for tire inflating and what not. I use it to fill a small air tank for topping up the air in our vehicle tires. It's worked well for some 30 years now.

I see Black & Decker has an updated "Air Station" compressor line. It might be worth a look.

Had the little Black and Decker "Air Station" for the past 7 years.... no issues. Yeah, it can take a couple of minutes to go from 28 lbs to 38 lbs. Use it half a dozen times per year for cars, bikes, and whatever. Never used the 12v car connection though. I think it cost $30-$39.

These are actually great little compressors if break-in is done properly. I bought one in 2013 just to run my nailer for a few projects until I moved my large compressor to my new house. Turns out I use it more than the large one, and four years later it's still going strong.

Here's a link to all the current HF coupons, including the 20% off ones.

The little 1/3 hp HF compressors work, but man they are slow. Plus is they only pull about 350 watts so you can use them with small/long power cords or small generators. $140 get you a little HF 700 watt generator and that compressor together to give you cheap air for little projects in the boondocks.

The happy compressor is this: https://www.harborfreight.com/8-gal-2-hp-125-psi-oil-lube-air-compressor-68740.html . Its light, 4.7 cfm, and $99-109 when on sale. Even at $129 it is still a decent buy.

The Ryobi cordless inflator was mentioned above. Great item for $20 (assuming you have a battery). I carry one of those in the trunk for football/soccer/basketball/tires. Good for adding a few PSI to a tire if needed. Still slow but compared to an old hand pump..........
