Probably not much. VW garnered all of the publicity and ill will of the motoring community by being the first to have gotten caught with its pants down on this issue. For GM it seems that it will be a "been there, done that, old hat by now" situation.
Also helping GM out is the fact that VW owners of its cars with 40+ MPG mostly felt that they were doing their part by lowering their carbon footprint and pollution impacts. Those drivers felt like they were flat out lied to as the vehicles gave out more pollution then they had been led to believe, and care deeply about this issue and have made much noise.
GM diesel engines are installed in pickups and other trucks. Some of these vehicles need a diesel because of towing or heavy load needs. Some trucks are purchased because they are rather trendy, there are even folks that modify their diesel pickups with an exhaust stack in the rear that can billow black smoke on command. My guess is that the majority of these owners do not care much at all about this issue.
