Over the past year my 92 Chevy pickup (around 150K miles) has been leaking transmission fluid. Not a continual leak, but after sitting a few days there's a puddle of fluid on the garage floor. Then there's no more leaking for several weeks. It's not the pan or rear seal. I think it may be coming from the front area of the trans, but I'm not sure. The other thing, sometimes while driving at highway speeds, the truck has a "shudder", or feels slightly erratic. The truck has its original 4L80E trans. From these symptoms, does anyone here have a guess as to what the problem could be? Does this sound like a solenoid problem or what? Thanks.

Your truck does not have a 4L80. It either has a TH350 if it's a 3spd or a 4l60 if it is a 4spd. I cannot remember what year was which but it very well could be 92 or 93 when they switched. Only 8 lug 2500s and up would have the TH400 or 4L80.

I think your in keep it going mode. A rebuilt transmission would probably cost more than the truck is worth.

New fluid and filter change cannot hurt.

Maybe talk to an indy transmission shop for their opinion.

Hey, if you have a heart problem most likely you would go see a heart specialist, so why not go see a transmission specialist. In the past I have gone to 2 or 3 auto parts stores for transmission guys they would recommend and it worked out for me. It's a thought.

They switched to the 700R4 almost 10 years earlier. I think 1981 was the last year for the TH350.

They added electronic control around 1992 ish but that would just add the "E" to the couple-years-old modern naming system.

This should be a dead-nuts simple trans to swap, replace, and-or rebuild. Sounds like it just needs "soft parts" and a new torque converter.

Torque converter could leaking down internally while it sits (nothing to be alarmed about), raising the fluid level. Then the raised level is leaking out somewhere. Could be something as easy as dipstick o-ring.

Agree with Memphis above, "It needs some fresh fluid, a new filter and try some ATP205 for the seal leaks, that stuff is seriously almost magic."

Other than that, we can't offer much more speculation if you can't identify where it's coming from. Regardless, if it's not an externally-replaceable seal, such as the pan gasket, dipstick o-ring, or perhaps another minor pass-through gasket or hose leak, it becomes a big job anyway... so I go back to AT205...

good luck,
-m

Dug out my paperwork, and I erred with the trans type. Like Max says above, it's a "4L60-E" (GM code MD8, 700R4) series. As to the fluid and filter, I put in a new filter and fluid (Valvoline) 7 years ago with 130K miles. The truck now has 148k, so that's around 18K on the fluid and filter. I can certainly do that again, but if I had the pan off, is there a few solenoids or something that I could replace while I'm in there? In any case, I'll definitely try some AT-205. As to the truck, I bought it new 25 years ago (1992 "Sport" Edition w/350 and posi rear) and it's in excellent condition. So, if needed, I'd have no problem with putting in a new trans, as I'd rather have this truck than a new one. If I can't sort things out, I can surely take it to a pro. Thanks!

If it's not rusted out, keep it and replace the trans. People suggesting you replace the truck after 25 years as the orig owner are nuts.

Its never the solenoids, that's a diversion that people use when they are trying to sell a vehicle with a clapped out trans.

Shudder and erratic, I agree with fresh fluid and filter. Easy way for me has been to do a pan drop and refill every 10k and repeat 3x, then 30k after that.

For the small leak, there's a front seal on the transmission that may have had its day.

Could be needing a new torque converter, that could explain the shudder, definitely sounds like a transmission guy could figure it out. There are a lot of updates that can be done to the 4L60E if you tow or haul with it, might be worth looking into if you're going to keep it.

I got my 89 from my father in-law but right before he passed away he had to put a new tranny in it and it was $1900 out the door. Well worth it, these old GM's are nice trucks.

Couldn't find any ATP AT-205 today. Guys at Oreillys and Advance were unfamiliar with it. I'll just order some online. Here's a relatively recent pic of the truck. Original paint except for the hood.

A 1992 will have a 4L60/700R4 NOT a 4L60E, 700R4 RPO is MD8, 4L60E RPO is M30. You only have one solenoid....TCC Solenoid.

A leaky TCC solenoid can cause TCC shudder, Though uncommon on this unit as it doesn't take much pressure to keep the TCC apply valve stroked....They typically just stop working altogether.

A engine misfire can cause bucking when the TCC is locked.

The VSS sensor is a common leak point & reoccurring problem with the design, You can install a 1996/1997 4L60E extension housing & VSS sensor & eliminate the issue forever.

Do not use Cork, Rubber, Or Felt pan gaskets, Use GM# 8654799 gasket & torque to 10 ft lbs/120 in lbs.

It actually felt like the engine may have been misfiring a little during highway speeds (40-55 or so). Sort of a slight "bucking" feel is the best I can describe it (or the "shudder" I mentioned earlier). I replaced a leaky VSS sensor a few years ago (and rear seal around the same time). Don't remember what kind of pan gasket I did 7 years ago, but it hasn't leaked. If I open this thing up again, I will use one like you suggested. Is there access to the TCC unit with the pan off? Thanks very much for the info.

That truck is in insane condition, no one can say you don't take care of your vehicles. We have a 97 that my dad stopped oil spraying and it immediately started to rust out. If that were mine, I would skip the 700R4 and swap in a NV3500, 2WD should make it an easy swap.
