Push rod question

So for an older GM 5.7L engine, does the fuel pump push rod wear? They stock them at NAPA so someone must be buying them due to wear or damage. These are engines around 1985.

Yet it looks like a heavy duty chunk of steel.

Why do people (or why did they) replace them, do they become shorter or get all mashed up?

(I had thought about asking this question before but could not remember if I did.)

They wear occasionally and so does the lobe, if it looks okay there is no need to change it, changing it will not make up for a worn lobe (the reason many guys change them in a hail Mary pass before using a block off plate and electric pump).

Agreed. I've never seen one go bad, even on 7,000 RPM circle track engines.

Replacements are available because people lose them during a rebuild :p
