Anyone done one of these conversions? I have seen everything from $500 projector retrofits to $25 eBay glass lens conversions. There are reflector style ones and then 'euro' ones with a less clear lens.

Opinions? Looking to replace the 7x6 sealed beams in the mr2

Best upgrade I did to both my old Golf and 7er. With a proper headlight harness upgrade, they're every bit as bright as a modern headlamp.

Use "E-Code" (Euro) lights. They have a better beam pattern.

Sounds good. The harness in the car now is good for anything up to a 75w bulb according to lots of people who have done this swap.

Considering just the housings what would be better?

Did this on a 99 Suburban. Used Cibie E-code 7x6 lamp housings. Tried the Hella 7x6 housings and found them lacking with a poor beam pattern. Completely rewired the headlights w/10ga wire and relays. Rated to 150 watts per lamp. Tried some Osram 100 watt h4 lamps, loved them, very very bright, but short lived. Rated for about 120 hours, never got flashed because the cut off was so sharp with the Bosch headlamps. Now using Phillips extreme vision h4 lamps and very pleased.

i've heard the bosch housings were the best. also autopal is a good cheaper alternative E-code. have not heard many complaints about them. about $35 shipped for a pair.

I've used autopal and they are fantastic! Even kept the cheapo bulbs... Got a kit with normal color and wattage. There's a lot of hyper blue out there. These were the square bulbs on an 89 firebird.

No comparison between a quality e-code lamp and bulb vs. sealed beams. I'd stick w/ Hella or Cibie. Having both (and Lucas) on my cars I'd say the Hella's are a better value and seem more durable then the Cibie's. I'd give the edge on light pattern, on the 7" at least, to the Cibie's, but not by enough to justify the extra cost. I do not have any experience w/ the off brands, but for a headlight and relatively small $ difference, why not stick with a quality brand.

If these are your 1st e-codes, the sharp light cutoff gets some getting used to especially on dips in the road, at least for me, but you'll be hooked once you get accustomed.

I installed these guys on the electra a couple few months ago
They came with some JC whitney tier tinted bulbs so I bought a pair of standard H4 sylvanias and the light output is significantly better.

I also installed relays for all four lights in anticipation of this upgrade a couple years back.
