Best sounding engine that is NOT A V8.

V-twin in the bike below \/

with a race exhaust, sounds like a much more expensive Italian machine!

Muffler design seems to be the key. I heard the original Miata engineers went through many designs before they felt they had it sounding right.

Personally, I recall being impressed by a little 4-cyl in an old Fiat 124 Spyder.
And I like the burbling in a stock Triumph Tr-6.

If you like the sound of a 6 cylinder its real tough to beat a well built Toyota 2JZ, Nissan RB26, or a Nissan VQ35/37

hah I was thinking about Italian v-twins like Ducatis or Moto Guzzis. I had a Griso with aftermarket exhaust that sounded great. Probably any 90 degree v-twin sounds good.

The F1 V10's sounded pretty serious! Even alot of the Vipers with rear exhaust sound quite good. That CBX is neat, sounds better than other straight 6's, does it have a different firing order?

I can never pick a "best" of anything. But here's a smorgasbord of engine sounds that I like:

Turbo I5 in the Audi Group B Sport Quattro.

Honda 3.0L V10 F1 circa year 2000.

Honda V65 Magna V4

Rolls Merlin V12 on Full Supercharge.

EMD 567 V16 2-stroke in Run 8.

12V92 Detroit Diesels.

Napier 18-cylinder Deltics.

Mazda 20B 3-rotor Wankel.

Mazda 26B 4-rotor Wankel that won LeMans.

Ferrari V12's like they sounded in LeMans.

BMW or Toyota I6's running 6000+ rpm.

Porsche flat-6's.
