Is there analysis for grease?

My colleague used to do grease analysis. Here is a list of things I can remember that were done at our lab:
- water content
- remaining life
- contaminant analysis (amount and type)
- TAN

Water can seriously compromise the lube effectiveness. A content of 0.5% is about the maximum allowed for new grease. Once it gets over 1%, bearing life is markedly reduced.

Remaining life is determined by how much oil is left in the thickener.
