Looking at a 2000 Subaru outback with a head gasket problem.

120000 miles "it is in good condition" and don't know anything more than that. Question, what is the price range to offer for it? I have a 90K mile 2.5L engine. does $500 sound fair?

The owner was quoted $1250 for the HG repair which exceeds the cost of the car but I suspect it could be engine damage also, if they drove it extensively - I don't think they know how much damage it has until they tear it apart.

Will try to get better photos tomorrow.

You don't think they can get more than that in parts? The tranny, windshield, doors, etc.?

this is Washington DC area, pretty expensive. You may well be right but consider that factor.

Maybe $300 in Podunk, Nebraska.

Yeah, but who is going to pull then and sell them? What condition is the tranny in?

Sometimes you are better off to let go then try to part a car out that just isn't worth it. I'd say scrap + 100 since maybe its fixable. 500 max.
