How can the valve cover be so nasty... and the valve train be so clean in comparison?
 
I was going to say, before I saw the pictures...

well it's a plastic valve cover so it's cold so it attracts condensation etc.

But seeing it, that's gross!

I agree, looks like short trips, decent oil changes. Just water vapor condensing on the valve cover from short trips.

Looks like my 80s experience with quaker state. All that parafin comes in handy when the tstat fails and it overheats...

Is this from an 2009 by chance? Some of these LS head castings for a few year would develop micro cracks around the head studs. This would cause a small coolant leak.
 
Short trips never reaching operating temperature. That engine needs to run on the highway and get up to operating temperature, an stay there for a while.
