I decided to get a oil report on my Boxster S 2009 which uses the 3.4L 310hp DFI engine. I hit around the 60k mile mark and been debating whether to keep her or sell her. Keeping her.

She sometimes plumed white clouds on startup (normal according to mechanic, built up condensation in exhaust) and I've had some disappearing coolant so I've been a bit worried. Looks like I'm just a worry ninny.

I use Total Quartz 5w40 oil and my interval was 6k miles.

Good metal wear rates.
Serviceable used oil, despite signs of fuel dilution.
Thank you for sharing, btw and .......

I had no idea that there were different ones! Need to look this up a bit more. My mechanic who is a Porsche specialist here in San Diego got me on to it. The one I buy on Amazon for refills is the Energy version. Not sure which ones he uses in bulk.

Thanks! Yeah, I've heard because of the flat six design, Porsche engines might suffer from more fuel and coolant leaking into the oil. I don't know though.

Hah! Yeah, I forgot I registered an account here over ten years ago, thankfully the Forum software recognized me.

To what? Another A40 rated oil? That is what your car requires, is it not?

As long as the oil your dealer is using meets the spec required for your vehicle you aren't going to out-engineer the required specification.

Actually just an indy and I'm going to start doing my own changes in about 10k miles. Been thinking about switching to a 10w40 Redline or something along those lines.

Redline seems like a waste of $$$. I do like oils with a nice dose of moly in them. Which would be Pennzoil, Havoline, Castrol, Mobil etc...Not sure which ones meet spec so I'd check into that.

Which Redline oils carry the spec your car requires?

None, but the car will be out of warranty anyway. Thinking about Redline because of the sterling reputation it has among the HPDE groups and PCA I hang around in.

Understood. But warranty is irrelevant as you say, the performance of the oil IRT the engine requirements is what is needed. The thing about carrying a spec is that the oil has proven itself to meet the requirements of the manufacturer. Maybe Redline is "more better" but how would you know?

I don't know. Maybe I'm too analytical to think that a sterling reputation would be good enough for my Porsche if I had one. For $20-something a jug down at Walmart I can get two oils that for a fact are appropriate for that car. Maybe I've just moved on from glowing promises but no facts to back it up.

Are you claiming that there is something less sterling about the reputation of Castrol or Mobil 1? How is this reputation supported? Feelings or facts?
