I have no say in the oil choice in this motor, but I'm installing a freshly rebuilt engine in a '95 355 Spider this weekend and the owner says the local Ferrari guru specifically said 10W-40. From what I can see, Motul 300V is about the only 10W-40 out there even remotely in spec, is it not?

What do you mean by "in spec"? What spec does it call for?

If you need synthetic 10W-40, there is also Castrol Edge HM and Mobil1 HM. Both meet ACEA A3/B3 or A3/B4.

If you're looking for a high end 10W40,afaik,there's Redline 10W40,Amsoil 10W40,and Royal Purple HPS or XPR 10W40 (I think they're all still making a 10W40).

I can't help myself! This reminds me of a joke.

If it takes 10 men on 10 horses 10 days to cross the Simpson Desert, how long would it take a giraffe on a bicycle?

For a Ferrari, I believe the correct brew is Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40

Quote:
Specifications: API SN/CF; ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4; BMW LL-01; MB approval 229.5, 226.5; VW 502.00/505.00; Porsche A40; Renault RN0700, RN0710; PSA B71 2296, Ferrari. Meets the requirements of Fiat 9.55535-Z2 and Chrysler MS-10725

Right, but does an actual Ferrari spec exist, and if so, what are the requirements? From what I recall, it is just a marketing arrangement.

I think his point is that Rotella T6 is commonly used in high performance motorcycles that place a lot of stress on oil and T6 performs well. If it works well in a motorcycle engine it will work well in a Ferrari engine, regardless of any amount of
overthinking.

Ferrari have approved oil, the Shell Helix Ultra 5w40. However FIAT 9.55535-Z2 is the high performance full SAPS specification for the group. I think that spec perfectly mirrors Ferrari specification. For know reasons only Shell's lubricants have formal approval.

Do you have any links to confirm this?

I'm just curious as I have never seen any details about the Ferrari approval, which leads me to believe it is just a marketing approval, not a specification.

I happen to know for a fact that a local Ferrari/Maserati dealer down here uses the PP 5/40 and Amsoil.

A lot of F355 owners use everything from Castrol 10/60, to M1 15/50, to M1 0/40, and beyond.

The Helix was known to foam up pretty good under hard useage, so maybe not that oil.
