Torquing Acura Crank Bolt

I had no choice. Prepped bolt per FSM and did initial torque to 47 ft-lbs. Easy as pie. Got 30 degrees in one smooth action. Got another 15 on second try but bolt popped instead of rotating smoothly. Had to get last 15 with 3 quick bursts of impact. Thinking about it, all that matters is how much the bolt is stretched. The bolt does not know if it is being impacted or hand wrenched. Now, if the spec were torque only, it would matter a little because torque is more accurate when you approach in smooth continuous motion. It is clear, to me at least, that Honda does not want people using impacts because they will not take the time to set the bolt at 47ft-lbs then apply witness marks for the final 60 degrees. The Honda procedure is similar to that specified for structural bolts which are tightened with impacts.
